Event Description:
A study of the planning and control of construction activities, resources, and costs.  Topics include critical path analysis/methodology, progress monitoring, schedule compression, schedule acceleration resource management, cost control and cash-flow projections.
 
Student Learning Outcomes:
To create a learning environment whereby a student becomes able to:
 
A. Schedule construction projects manually and through the use of common scheduling software.
B. Manage project resources for optimum usage, using common metrics.
C. Control project costs by applying proper techniques and procurement practices.
D. Assemble construction project budgets and make cash flow projections.
E.  Recognize the need for documenting project productivity as well as tracking costs.
F.  Recognize over/under-runs and their significance on monthly job cost reports.
G.  Prepare monthly progress estimates for work-in-place (WIP) and billing.
H.   Present a project schedule to facilitate a keen understanding of scheduling principles.
I.    Understand the ethical conduct of a project manager, using
J.    Address safety concerns affecting a project schedule.  




Class will be taught by Dr. Scott Arias 
Scott Arias is a professor at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) teaching construction management. His prior positions include Director of Design-Build Construction, Director of Construction, Senior Operations Manager, Force Operations Chief and numerous other project supervision and management positions. His background includes experience in construction management, recruiting, safety and quality control. He is a retired Seabee Builder Senior Chief Petty Officer with duty stations at Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 1 and 7, Navy Recruiting District Michigan, Camp David, National Naval Medical Center Bethesda and Central Command Bahrain. He has a diverse background doing construction work all over the world in commercial, residential and industrial settings. Professor Arias holds 5 degrees in management, a PhD. in Construction Management, licensed in Michigan as a residential Builder, Certified Professor Constructor (CPC), Project Manager Professional (PMP), Planning and Scheduling Professional (PSP), Safety Training Supervisor and is a Journeyman Office Manager, Computer Technician and Counselor.  His military citations include three Navy Commendation Medal, six Navy Achievement Medals, two Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, two National Defense Service Medal and two Global War on Terror Medals. In addition, Dr. Arias is the President of a construction consulting firm, focused on government construction Division 1 requirements. Mr. Arias is a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico and is married with four kids.
